In 2012, ATU Duty-Free, a partnership of TAV Airports – Unifree – Gebr. Heinemann, opened the renovated duty free shopping areas with a ceremony held at Riga International Airport, the most important entry point of the Baltic region. Mr. Aivis Ronis, Transportation Minister of Latvia, made the opening of the stores which will be bringing the world famous brands to the doorsteps of the passengers.

In 2011, Latvia was visited by the president of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. During the official visit, the president of FIDE participated in a Latvian Chess Federation (LŠF) awards ceremony for 2011 achievements in chess, as well as signed a four-way memorandum (letter of intent) for the cooperation in the development of chess sport in the education system.

For the first time in November 2010, the new president of the Latvian Chess Federation (LŠF), Pēteris Šmidre, publicly presented a new strategy based on the general mathematical, logistical and scientifically-minded development of a national society. In addition, the new (LŠF) president pointed out the main objectives of the federation to be the development of a new generation of chess players, the need for strong promotion in professional chess development both in Latvia and internationally, and as the major long-term goal, advancement - to rank chess within the top three most popular Latvian sports.

In 2011, Vilnius hosted the seminar "Lithuania: One Year Prior to Digital Switchover". The seminar looked at issues such as digital transmission capabilities, high-definition television (HDTV) and 3DTV development, as well as the experience of the transition to digital television in other countries. The main goal of the seminar was to share the European experiences in the transition process, to look at new study data on detection methods and HDTV development in Europe. The seminar was attended by the directors of the biggest television channels and television production companies in Lithuania, as well as leading cable television operators.

In September 2011, the Netherlands household metal goods company, “Brabantia”, opened its 5th factory in the world in Pastende, district of Talsi. In the opening event participated Jurian Kraak, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Latvia, Christ van Elderen, CEO of Brabantia, Andris Ozols, Director of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia and Georgijs Buklovskis, Plant director of Brabantia Latvia. “Brabantia” has invested 3.5 million Lats in its Latvian subsidiary. With the official opening of the factory in Latvia, work started at full capacity.
